Diet Makeover - Step 2: Healthy

Diet Makeover - Step 2: Healthy

Healthy

We could talk all day about how healthy your food choices need to be to transform your body. But what about your mind? What keeps it healthy?

In the US, more than 7 million women and 1 million men have some kind of eating disorder. But I bet there are many times more people that have a love/hate relationship with food and just never talk about it. If losing weight or “dieting” feels like a torture to you, what are the real chances that you’ll stick to it? Do you really want to keep hammering yourself on the head for the sake of MAYBE fitting in your old jeans? Probably not.

According to a study run by the University of California at Los Angeles, 80% of people gain all the weight they lost from dieting back in less than 4 years. Actually, the researchers concluded that dieting is a predictor of future weight gain. The more you diet, the more you GAIN. Obviously something’s not right with the way most people approach fat loss nutrition. This is often overlooked by most fitness experts, but you need to train your mind as much as you train your body.

“I Have The Worst Cravings”

Here’s the classic cravings story.
You’re bored, and start to think about this bag of chips sitting in your pantry. You hear its calling. You can’t help yourself and tear it open. You start eating with reckless abandon but eventually the guilt catches up and you throw it in the trash can. But seconds later, you find yourself thinking: “They’re in a bag, so technically I could still eat those chips”. Then you feel bad about having the idea that eating food from a trash can is OK.

Everyone has cravings. To make sure they never control you again, apply those proven anti-cravings techniques that preserve your sanity.

Understand your cravings and fix them the right way

Ask yourself: “Why do I crave this food?” Is it because I want something crunchy? Is it because I miss this food from my childhood? Then, satisfy this craving using better ingredients. Instead of indulging on any random chocolate cake, prepare the “Ninja Chocolate Cake” I’ve outlined on ( Diet Makeover - Step 1: Tasty )

Identify your trigger foods

We all have that one particular food that triggers overeating, or that we just can’t portion control. For some people it’s chips, for some others chocolate cake.

Identify your trigger foods and find ways to control the way you eat them. Put your chips in a small bowl and take the bag away, or use 2-3 tbsp. of peanut butter and put it back in the pantry. Don’t use up all your limited willpower to fight against yourself for too long. If a food is too much of a trigger for you, you’ll have to make sure it’s never in your house, and that you only buy it on special occasions, in limited quantities.

Make your house a temple

We live in a world where 99% of the food around contributes to making us fatter. That’s just the way it is. To make your fat loss inevitable, make sure you only keep the healthiest foods possible in your house. Make clear rules about what can be in your fridge and pantry, and stick with them. When you feel like eating a treat food, buy a small portion and finish it right away – leaving nothing behind that could trigger your cravings later in the week.

“I Always Self-Sabotage My Goals”

We all do. Really.
I’m not trying to convince you that even a nutrition “guru” like me self-sabotages sometimes. I’m saying that even the fittest, leanest and most knowledgeable people on the planet (like other fitness experts I hang out with) have to fight their inner BS every single day just like you. This inner demon never goes away – even when you achieve your dream body and develop healthy habits. So you might as well learn the 4 steps to deal with it:

1. Accept that you’ll screw up

If you can’t accept the fact that you’re a human being with flaws… start working on it. Once you understand that bumps in the road are part of life and that they don’t make you a weak or bad person, you’ll be able to deal with them while keeping your focus on the goal.

2. Screw everything up, but learn from it

Once you do screw up, overindulge, skip your exercise or eat the wrong foods at the restaurant, take some time to ask yourself: “Why did that happen? What could have I done better? How do I feel about it?” Trust me – taking the time to learn a lesson from your mistakes is the key to making you stronger in the future.

3. Get back on track. Now.

If you do screw up, the worst thing you can do is to start playing the video on “Repeat” in your head and beat yourself up about it for an entire week. This will destroy your selfconfidence and probably lead you to screwing up even more. The simple question that solves everything is: “Does it really matter that much?” If you ate five cookies instead of two, have you really destroyed all your chances of future success?  Then, remember your long-term goal, accept your imperfect self and get back on track.

4. Use damage control with care

If you overindulge on Monday, should you exercise more or eat less on Tuesday? Yes and no. Damage control is a good idea, but abusing it will create a really messy relationship with food. Always use damage control in a positive way, not as a punishment. That might help you enjoy your drinks guilt-free on Saturday, because you know that your exercise and diet will be clean on Sunday.

“I Have No Motivation To Eat Right”

Bad news. You know how essential eating right is to your fat loss results, and yet you don’t feel any motivation to change what you’re doing right now. Is there something more frustrating? Motivation is complicated, and comes from different places for different people. Here’s how to find your own motivation.

1. Find your reason why, and believe

Why do you want to change your eating habits? To lose weight? To feel better? To be healthier? To live longer? Whatever your goal is – if you don’t believe it can actually be done, don’t expect to get any boost in your motivation. If you don’t believe in it right now, pretend you do. I’m serious; sometimes you have to lie to yourself until it becomes your reality.

2. Focus on the positive

Forget about forbidden foods, cheat meals and other words that categorize food in either the “good” or “evil” categories. They will only make your journey a real torture.Instead of focusing on what you’re missing on by changing your habits, focus on what you’ll get out of it – how much healthier these foods make you and how you can inspire others around you to transform their lives too.

3. One step at a time

Some hardcore people might be able to change everything they eat overnight. But for most people, the stress it creates will lead to quick failure and discouragement. Identify one food habit you want to change this week or this month, and stick to it until it feels like the natural thing to do. Then, focus on the next thing.
Some examples:

  • Less sugar in your coffee
  • Swapping ingredients when preparing your favorite recipes
  • Never drinking liquid calories
  • Having breakfast before grabbing your coffee at the drive through to prevent yourself from grabbing those yummy glazed donuts

Taking baby steps will be a slower process compared to diets that make you go “all-in” – but in the end, it will multiply your chances of success.

4. Make fun of your excuses

We’re humans, so we like to justify things. If you have no motivation to eat right, try to find why. Chances are that you’ll come up with one of the excuses contained in the book you’re reading right now (no time, no skills, not sure what to do, etc.). Then, accept how ridiculous this all sounds – and start working on eliminating that sticking point.

“I Feel Overwhelmed”

Fat. Protein. Calories. Macronutrients. The synergy the vitamin C in your orange has with its bioflavonoid complex. There are so many things to think about when it comes to food that this may feel overwhelming. Often times, this leads to paralysis by analysis – so you end up doing nothing instead of trying something and possibly doing it wrong.

Do a media fast

The worst thing you can do when feeling overwhelmed is to consume MORE information. Instead, you need to stop listening to all the noise. And because the media are a terrible source of nutrition and health advice, I highly suggest you STOP watching TV shows and reading magazines on the subject – for as long as possible.

Focus on what really matters

If you spend too much time obsessing over little details, you’re spending less time focusing on what makes a real difference. Instead of spending hours wondering whether you should eat a certain food or not, ask yourself:

  • Did that exist 200 years ago?
  • Can I understand the ingredients list?
  • Can this be grown, picked or raised?

If it fits the 3 criteria, you know this food is a good choice. If not, you know it shouldn’t be a staple in your diet.

Stick With One Coach

Different experts may have different opinions or guidelines on different subjects. If you’re confused by conflicting information, here’s what you need to do: Stick with one coach. I don’t care if you choose me or another expert you trust; just stick with one expert and one source of information.

“My Friends And Family Don’t Support Me”

As if changing your food habits from fat-gaining to fat-burning wasn’t hard enough, you can expect resistance from people around you – including your friends and family.

The Comfort Zone

Stepping out of your own comfort zone is very hard. You have to find the motivation, take action, and then get used to the feeling that you’re not doing the right thing until it becomes a habit. The same thing happens for people around you when YOU decide to make real change in your life. You see, the simple fact that you
change your behavior can trigger their defense mechanisms.

We’ve Heard Them All…

Your friends and family love you; but chances are they won’t understand what you’re trying to achieve by choosing specific times to have treats and focusing on healthier ingredients – and may even try to slow you down using all sorts of good reasons why you should not do it:

  • "C'mon… it’s just a piece of cake. It won’t kill you." (I understand, but I chose to have desserts only during the weekend. Do you mind if I bring one serving back home? It looks fabulous.)
  • "That’s not healthy." (Nick Pineault taught me it is… you have to check out his book! Eye-opening stuff.)
  • "You’re perfect the way you are." (Thank you. I promise I’ll be even better.)
  • "Take a break and enjoy life! Eat those French fries!" (Oh thanks, but I’ll probably have them on my treat dinner on Friday anyway.)

Stay strong. Remember that you’re doing this for YOU, and not anyone else.

Action Beats Analysis

If you catch yourself wondering if you should hide the fact that you’re trying to life a healthier lifestyle, or spend too much time wondering what people think about it… Stop. Over-analysis will only create more stress in your life. Instead of staying in your own head, take action. Your new-self may make people uncomfortable and fearful, but your actions and results will inspire them. Trust me. At this very moment, most people secretly wish they were as strong and in control as you – and had the courage to make change happen.

HEALTHY ACTION STEPS

1. To lose weight and stay healthy, you'll have to train your mind has hard as your body. Never forget
that critical fact and get to work.

2. Never keep foods that trigger your cravings around the house. Buy them in small quantities for occasional treats, and finish the whole thing at once instead of keeping a tempting leftover.

3. Accept that you're going to screw up. Everyone does – even the most disciplined athlete (or nutrition
nerd like me). When it does happen, get back on track immediately (not tomorrow) without wasting any energy on guilt or any of those negative feelings.

4. Only you can find the inner motivation to make the right foods choices and start your own diet makeover. Take baby steps, trying to incorporate ONE new thing in your routine every week.

5. If you feel overwhelmed by conflicting information and different experts’ opinions, take a media fast. You don't need more information; you need to do what ONE expert is telling you and stick with it.

6. Expect resistance from your friends and family. Stay strong and remember that you're doing this for YOU, and that your actions will eventually inspire people around you.

Diet Makeover - Step 1: Tasty

Diet Makeover - Step 1: Tasty

Why is unhealthy food so tasty?

It’s science.

Food companies spend millions every year developing tasty food products that will appeal to consumers. In the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, they test and tweak the perfect blend of salt, sugar and fat until it reaches something called the “bliss point” – where the taste becomes the most appealing and addicting possible. That’s what the food giant General Mills did in 1999 when it created Yoplait, the first yogurt that contained 2X the sugar of Lucky Charms cereal while being advertised as healthy.

The question is: Are they to blame? According to the CEOs of these food giants, consumers have the power of choice and could simply pick healthier foods if they wanted to. But we know this just doesn’t happen, and that this mindset comes with a huge price – the rise in obesity, type-2 diabetes and a ton of health problems for millions of people.

So that’s what you have to fight against every day. Hundreds of scientists running huge experiments to develop the most tasty, addicting, appealing and probably fattening food products possible. No wonder your broccoli and chicken meal seems bland and boring.I’m convinced that one of the keys to inevitable fat loss is making sure you meals are as mouth-watering as they are fat burning.
The next few lines will help you do just that.

“Healthy Foods Don't Taste That Good”

Really?

I’ll be blunt. Your food doesn’t taste bland because healthy food is bland in its nature – but because of the quality of your ingredients and possibly your lack of cooking skills. After all, the best chefs in the world use simple, healthy, all-natural ingredients to prepare the tastiest meals mankind has ever seen. The good news is: You don’t have to be a chef to make your healthy fat burning meals taste good.

3 Keys To Tasty Fat Burning Meals

Fresh ingredients

The fresher, the better. Buying whole foods is a good start, and focusing on a local farmers market will help you find the tastiest fruits and veggies around. Try using fresh herbs and spices instead of the dried kind that has been sitting on supermarket shelves for years, and your taste buds will thank me for it.

Salt it up!

Salt is a must for almost any recipe out there, because it reveals all the other flavors in your meal. Don’t be afraid to use it. Unrefined salts kind like Himalayan rock salt or sea salt are actually good for you and won’t raise your blood pressure.

Taste Your Meal

This is the biggest mistake most amateur cooks do. They stick to the recipe with horse blinders on, feeling afraid they might screw it up if they change the quantities. Before serving ANY meal, ask yourself: “Does it need more salt? Spices? Herbs?” You’ll be surprised of how it will transform your meals from bland to 5-star-tasty.

Train Your Taste

Processed foods you might crave were engineered to make your taste buds perfectly happy and stimulate your appetite. Never forget that sad fact. It will feel weird, but the reason you find healthy food so bland might be… your “broken” taste buds. You see, studies show that eating processed foods, sugar and added taste-stimulating ingredients like monosodium glutamate (MSG) will desensitize your taste buds – making everything natural appear bland and boring to you. If you’re eating a diet consisting of more than 10% processed foods or a lot of sugar (or both!), then eating whole foods for 3-4 weeks straight will completely change the way you taste food. After a while, some fruits might even feel too sugary to you.

“My Kids/Husband/Wife Don’t Like It!”

We’re creatures of habit. We like things to be a certain way. And if possible, we like them to stay that way for as long as possible. If you decide to change your eating habits, expect resistance – ranging from children shunning your amazing veggie dish to a frustrated husband that sees his Thursday triple-cheese lasagna transformed into stuffed bell peppers.

Should I Cook Separate Meals?

Sometimes, this is the best solution. Of course, you’ll spend more time preparing food, washing dishes, etc. But if you’re dedicated, you’ll find a way to do it. Remember though: If you try to force new habits on people, they might wonder if their meals will be as tasty as before (see last page), or if they’re going to be as filling and satisfying as their favorite meals. Set the example. Learn how to cook healthy meals so tasty that even the most reluctant eater will be tempted to take a bite. That should convert them to some degree and make them confident that you have the skills to change how they eat but while keeping their satisfaction and taste buds in mind.

Ninja Technique (Advanced)

Who said you have to change everything around if you want to make smarter food choices? It doesn’t have to be that way. With a little bit of creativity, you can use my favorite ninja technique in the kitchen and “hide” nutrients in your spouse or children favorite meals.

1. Hide well-cooked and mashed cauliflower in your mashed potatoes. You can cook both simultaneously to save time. With the right amount of added spices, salt and butter, you’ll be able to hide up to 50% cauliflower without anyone raising an eyebrow.

2. Add zucchini, carrots and celery in your spaghetti sauce or any tomato-based meal. Use an immersion blender to blend everything at the last second – making it impossible even for the most difficult eater to detect the extra veggies and nutrition.

3. Develop the very unique and useful ability to prepare sugar-free, healthy desserts that actually taste good. Try my “Ninja Chocolate Cake”.

“Ninja Chocolate Cake” Recipe

This recipe will make you confident in your ability to prepare sugar-free, gluten-free
(if that’s a goal for you), bad-stuff-free and simply amazing desserts. Try it.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. (454g) dark chocolate drops (70% cacao or more)
  • 8 tbsp. butter
  • 9 pasture-raised eggs, separated
  • ¾ cups xylitol
  • Berries for topping (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9 inch spring form pan.

2. Place chocolate and butter into the top of a double boiler and heat over (not touching) about 1 inch of simmering water until melted.

3. Whisk the egg yolks with the xylitol in a bowl until light yellow in color.

4. Whisk some of the chocolate mixture into the egg yolk and xylitol mixture to temper the eggs. This will keep the eggs from scrambling from the heat of the chocolate. Then whisk in the rest of the chocolate mixture.

5. Beat the egg whites in a mixing bowl until stiff peaks form and fold into the chocolate mixture. Pour into the prepared spring form pan and bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Cake is done when the top is set and begins to crack and a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out with moist crumbs clinging to it.

6. Let stand 10 minutes, and then remove the ring of the spring form pan. Serve cake at room temperature and garnish with berries if desired.

“I Can’t Give Up My Favorite Foods”

You probably heard that promise before from weight loss programs: “Lose weight eating your favorite foods!” There’s no doubt in my mind that this CAN be done, but you’ll have to be very strategic about it.

Treat Foods And Your 10%

If your favorite foods are mac and cheese, pancakes and chocolate cake, there’s no way you’re going to lose weight and stay healthy eating those every single day. Consider these meals your treat foods, and enjoy them without any guilt at very strategic moments:

  • After intense exercise (not your 5-minutes breeze walk)
  • As a treat meal, 10% (or less) of the time
  • At family dinners, where controlling what you eat could be next to impossible anyway

Are You Imprisoned By Your Favorite Foods?

For some people, comfort foods that mom used to cook or that make them feel good are a trap. You need to fully enjoy your food to lose weight without losing your mind in the process. But if you consider your favorite foods “sacred” and never want to tweak the recipes, your stubbornness will sabotage your results.Be an open-minded cook and at least try the ingredients swaps below on your favorite recipes...

“I Have No Cooking Skills”

If I wanted to be very honest, I would simply say:  “No s**t, Sherlock!” But I won’t say that.

Instead, here’s the polite yet honest truth. No one is born with cooking skills. Forget that idea. Everyone messed up recipes, slowly learned skills, and eventually got good at it. I know cooking may be very intimidating for some people, but you’ll have to muster your courage and take the plunge…Here are the things I wish someone would have told me from the very beginning:

“Buy this cookbook” : Click Here To Grab

Grab a cookbook that uses simple, healthy ingredients and contains recipes that you can prepare in minutes. The Paleo Cookbook is a great start, because it contains more than 370 real food recipes without any bad ingredients.

“Stop trying to be perfect”

If you’re anything like me, you like things sturdy and organized. But in the kitchen, you have to let go of that idea of perfection. Cut veggies fast and approximately instead of slow and perfectly shaped. Things will get messy, but you won’t waste your time in the kitchen and get bored by all the time you spend in there.

“Season your damn food!”

Most amateur cooks are very shy when it comes to spices and salt. Use both of them liberally (always use unrefined rock or sea salt) to adjust taste of every recipe, just before serving. A recipe that tastes bland can discourage you, but often times all that’s missing is a pinch of salt!

“Use real food”

If you mix pre-seasoned rice with water and powder with milk to prepare your meal… you’re not learning how to cook. Use real food ingredients like veggies, meat, potatoes, spices and herbs, and follow the recipe. Eventually, you’ll even be able to adjust the recipes to your taste or nutritional needs.

TASTY ACTION STEPS

1. Your fat burning meals have to be tasty. Use unrefined salt, fresh herbs and spices liberally and always adjust the taste of your meal before serving.

2. Your taste buds may be screwed up. Cut on the processed foods for a couple of weeks and you'll see
that everything healthy suddenly tastes better.

3. If people in your household don't like the healthy meals you prepare, try to hide veggies in their favorite meals instead – or just let it go and cook separate meals.

4. Do not stop eating your favorite foods cold turkey. Instead, eat them after your intense workouts
(which everyone should do) and make sure you eat the right foods at least 90% of the time.

5. Grab a healthy recipe book ( From Here ) and start cooking fast and easy recipes. Practice makes perfect.

4 Step Diet Makeover

4 Step Diet Makeover

“What Diet Are You On?”

In America – where 35% of adults are obese, a number that should be closer to 44% by 2030 – this question is as common as the weather forecast.

On top of the usual Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, South Beach, The Zone, The Biggest Loser and a ton of the popular diets around, hundreds of other fads like the infamous cabbage soup diet or the disgusting lemonade diet appear every day. These diets help some people lose weight and transform their lives; but most of the time, they :

  • Screw up your metabolism because of the extreme restriction
  • Make you gain the weight back (and then some!)
  • Make you lose pounds of water instead of pounds of fat
  • Promote bad relationship with food
  • Make your body deprived and fatigued
  • Do little to help you develop lasting habits
  • Put you on this infernal yo-yo dieting cycle most people spend years on

In ther words: They simply suck.

The word diet doesn’t have to refer to the short 2 months you’re willing to stop eating and start exercising 7 times a week – hoping to get in shape for the beach season or your date next week. “Diet” is what you eat. Period. Do you really need another short-term diet? Definitely not.

What You Need Is a Foolproof  System Only You Can Develop

A customized nutrition system that is :

1. Tasty : because all the bad foods out there are so damn addictive.

2. Healthy : for your body, but mainly healthy for your mind because you probably already obsess about food
too much.

3. Simple : because your life is already complicated enough as it is, and that too many rules lead to failure
and leaveyoufeeling like crap.

4. Inevitable : which means it sets lasting habits in place, and makes you eventually forget you’re on a
“diet” at all.

To be honest, I’m not the kind of guy that’s the most comfortable talking about the mindset stuff. I’d rather stick to my nutrition nerdiness. But I would be making you a HUGE disservice by doing that. In reality, if you consume more information but decide that you’ll start on Monday or as your New Year’s resolution – I
doubt you’ll ever transform your body and life.

What’s This Makeover All About?

This guide contains simple answers to complicated situations that happen for everyone when dealing with food, fat loss and dieting. Your journey will be hard, but you’re not alone. I’ll help you stick to the plan and actually feel like you’re making progress. You can pick and choose the steps that appeal the most to you but I’m sure all of them will benefit you in some way.

Remember: Practice makes perfect. To create your perfect system where fat loss will be inevitable and mindless, you’ll need to work hard.

New buying habits, new foods, new recipes, new mindset… Expect those changes to feel really uncomfortable at times. And when you get that feeling that tells you to quit because it’s just “not what you do” – you’ll know you’re about to have a life changing breakthrough.

Stick to the plan, and your new habits will get easier every day until you start to actually enjoy them. Trust me.

I know you can do it .
